The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.
Players will gain the option to question certain decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the practice currently in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step arrives only a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there is no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.
Practical Application
An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its events.
Further Updates
Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.
Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
