The decision by the DNC to withhold the public viewing regarding its own autopsy report concerning the last presidential race seems stunning but to be expected. Opposed to frank assessments, the party's leadership apparatus operates more like a communications shop rather than a political organization focused on building a volunteer base capable of prevailing at the polls.
A Climate of Conformity
Hesitant to depart from the party establishment's culture of conformity, the DNC has stayed within the Biden-Harris shadow throughout this past year. Making public the findings would have indicated that the leadership are interested to foster honest conversation regarding the strategic failures which allowed the former president to become president again. Yet, the committee is acting as if there are no lessons to be learned following the electoral catastrophe of 2024.
"Here’s our North Star: does this help us win? If not, it’s a distraction from what truly matters," a justification that has been offered to justify concealing the report.
Major Failures a Report Could Have Examined
A genuine analysis of substance would confront certain uncomfortable matters. These include:
- Electoral Alienation: Failing to retain among millions of voters who voted for the Democratic ticket in 2020 became a critical factor in the narrowly decided recent race.
- A Decision to Run: The unwavering choice by the incumbent to seek re-election, alongside an extremely delayed withdrawal, has been criticized as robbing Democratic voters of a genuine choice.
- Failing the Working-Class Base: Amid inflation, the electoral effort allegedly accommodating corporate donors' interests without successfully attempting to challenge the effects of corporate greed.
- The Gaza Impact: An unwillingness to reconsider an approach regarding a major international conflict reportedly led to alienating many voters, particularly with youth voters, Arab American communities, Muslim voters.
- Losing Young Voter Allegiance: Extensive evidence shows a major decline in votes for the candidate among the youth electorate.
A History Avoiding Accountability
Choosing secrecy is consistent with a recurring tendency to avoid uncomfortable facts. It echoes a situation where virtually every elected Democrat in Congress supported a sitting president's insistence on seeking another term right up until a disastrous televised debate forced a change.
Concurrently, overwhelming numbers of the electorate were consistently telling researchers that they did not want that candidate to seek re-election.
Campaign Spending Questions
An honest report would also probe questions regarding campaign spending, including how much money were directed to high-priced advisors as well as ad buyers during an electoral effort which expended a colossal amount in a short period.
The Larger Problem
At its core, the blockage regarding the analysis points to an allegiance to the established hierarchy responsible for a disastrous presidential campaign. The signal for ordinary supporters – including millions of small donors – is that they cannot be trusted to understand what the leadership have learned from an analysis drawing from feedback from all states.
A party unwilling to publicly examine where it went wrong is unlikely to break free from the cycle that proved so beneficial to the winning candidate.
