Just as bad weather swept through the northwest the previous evening, City overwhelmed Manchester United aside at the Etihad Stadium. It was a statement 3-0 win for the City coach's side due to goals from Knaak, Shaw and Hemp. It was a display that truly announced their title credentials as they reinforced their standing at the league summit.

Back-to-Back Defeats for United

This outcome marked successive league defeats for the United manager's side for the first time since May 2024, leaving them a sizable gap off the table toppers with their championship aspirations hanging by a thread.

United’s capability to balance domestic and continental soccer with a limited squad has been a frequently analyzed issue since they earned a place in the European competition. Considering the fixture list, it always felt like this was the matchday that would truly test this ability. Unfortunately for the away side, they seemed fatigued all game, the memorable win against the French side clearly having taken a toll.

Team Changes

Marc Skinner had sought to freshen things up with a a few adjustments. Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Dominique Janssen and Galton all added energy, although the exclusion of the on-form Melvine Malard to the substitutes caused surprise.

Commanding Opening Period

The hosts, meanwhile, could have extended their advantage when a delightful Vivianne Miedema through ball sent Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it was insignificant to the hosts. Previously unable to overcome any team who ended above them last season, City's side now have wins against the Gunners and Manchester United to put them in a commanding situation after nine games.
