The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak on the road in the top division and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced twice from corners in the first half to place their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the scores five minutes after the defender's opener, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of excellent stops to ensure the London club went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing the match official to check the score on the screen and the official decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves the manager's team into third place in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton stay 14th and are half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils role at both ends of the field

Following a drab weekday performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a only attempts on goal, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was failed to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have faded somewhat and fans flocked to the gates after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two recognised strikers - had scored just a single goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to add to that miserable record on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having space and time to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, as well, failed to make an impact after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Spurs box.
