Individuals Stopping Slimming Jabs Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that individuals who come off new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users purchasing these drugs must be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically see a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Testimonies

People who have come off the jabs report a intense return of hunger.

"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This challenge is worsened if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
